Description:
Common laburnum (Laburnum anagyroides), known as “Golden rain,” is a deciduous tree or large shrub (5–7 m tall) with a spreading crown and drooping shoots. In May–June it flowers with long (up to 30 cm) hanging clusters of yellow flowers, resembling golden rain. All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are poisonous due to the presence of cytisine. Main characteristics and care: Flowering: abundant, bright yellow, in May–June for 3–4 weeks. Leaves: trifoliate, gray-green, with silvery pubescence on the underside. Soil: prefers fertile, well-drained, calcareous soils; does not tolerate waterlogging. Light: light-loving; for abundant flowering requires a sunny, wind-protected location. Winter hardiness: moderate (down to –25 °C); suitable for temperate regions, but in severe winters it may suffer frost damage and requires protection when young. Use: employed in landscape design for creating arches and pergolas, as well as in solitary plantings. The plant is undemanding and tolerant of urban conditions, but caution is required when planting due to its toxicity.
