Rubus fruticosus Thornfree

Plant age: 1+ y.

Size: P9

Height of the adult plant: 300-400 cm

Frost resistance: -30°C

Description: 'Thornfree' is a wonderful mid-early ripening variety with powerful, stiff, thornless shoots, rightfully considered one of the best blackberry varieties. 'Thornfree' was developed in the United States (Maryland) in 1966. The bush can reach a height of 3 (and more) meters, semi-erect (semi-trailing), moderately spreading, with beautiful leaves and numerous pale-pink flowers. From one 'Thornfree' plant, up to 10-15kg (!) of delicious, fleshy black berries can be harvested, each weighing about 8g. The taste varies from a refreshing tart-sweet at the beginning of ripening to a pleasant bland-sweet. Clusters sag under the weight of the berries: they bear between 30 to 50 oval fruits! 'Thornfree' is an undemanding and productive blackberry variety, easily adapts to frosty winters, and is capable of resisting various pathogenic microorganisms. It can grow in the same spot for up to 30 years. 'Thornfree' is considered one of the best commercial varieties, as it possesses a maximum of virtues: easy to care for, productive, and yields berries of excellent quality.
