It is an elegant, fast-growing woody vine from the legume family, resembling wisteria, with dark green glossy foliage and abundant summer flowering in June–July. The plant produces large clusters of light purple, lilac, or pink fragrant flowers, forms long legume pods, and its shoots twine to the left.
Unlike wisteria, the flowers bloom in summer rather than spring, and the plant is less frost-hardy, requiring winter protection.
