Fragaria x ananassa Kotoka

Size: P-9

Plant age: 0+ y.

Description: The variety was officially introduced in 2011 as a special type of strawberry grown exclusively in Nara Prefecture. The name "Kotoka" comes from the Japanese words "koto" meaning "capital" and "ka" meaning "flower." Together, they roughly translate as "a new flower blooming in the ancient capital" – an enchanting name! Kotoka is the most common variety in Nara Prefecture, grown for sale in elite online stores throughout Japan and marketed as a premium-class strawberry available in limited quantities. The plant forms tall, strong, vigorous multi-stemmed bushes. The berries are plump, large (70–100 g), elongated-conical in shape, ruby red and glossy. The taste is unique: the flesh is both tender and firm, with a rich, sweet flavor full of depth and a true strawberry aroma! The yield is higher than many modern varieties, while the plant is undemanding in terms of growing conditions, winter-hardy, and disease- and pest-resistant to international standards. Kotoka is a bombshell of a variety: it effortlessly provides delicious berries for hobby gardeners and gives farmers a strong product for the market! Thanks to the density of its berries, Kotoka stores longer than other commercial varieties, and with its stunning appearance and intoxicating fragrance, it sells out in a flash!
